When we cut the ribbon for the Maynard Children’s Hospital in 2013, we introduced 78,000 square feet of dedicated space to support our youngest patients and their families. A whimsical aquatic theme pervades every element, from the curvilinear building to the bubbles, beaches and coral reefs that engage children visually and tangibly, even in the treatment rooms. And our efforts haven’t gone unnoticed, either — the hospital was featured in the 2014 design showcase of Healthcare Design magazine.

The hospital’s first floor includes a play therapy yard with swings, climbing structures and a basketball court. Families can also relax, do laundry and shower at the Ronald McDonald House six-room retreat. The second floor encompasses a special care nursery for infants no longer needing critical care as well as the KISU unit, a six-bed controlled environment for children with cancer and other diseases that compromise the immune system.
This is your Maynard Children’s Hospital. It’s where your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and all the other young people you love will be cared for when a need arises.
Creativity with real clinical benefits
How do you reduce a child’s anxiety in a waiting room? Try a multi-touch interactive wall. What about keeping a child still during an MRI? With a diversion room that offers an immersive audio/visual experience to help children relax. At our children’s hospital, innovative tactics help soothe fears. Best of all? This unconventional approach has real benefits. In many cases, for example, our diversion elements alone will sufficiently relax a patient so that we can avoid sedation — ultimately leading to safer, more efficient procedures.
Let’s promise them the world…
Together, we can do even more for the children of eastern North Carolina. The needs may be ongoing, but the opportunities are endless.
